Periods 6 & 7, Post 17: "The Veil"

Hi, guys. I know that this has been an "off" week for many reasons, but don't let that distract you academically!!

In the first chapter of Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi depicts demonstrators protesting both for and against a law mandating that all women in Iran wear veils; those who support the law cheer, "The veil!" while those against it cheer, "Freedom!" Why do you think this is? Why might some Muslim women support wearing veils, while others do not? And finally, what is the "separation of church and state"?

Your comments will count as a homework assignment for the third marking period of the semester.

  1. john rivera some muslims women might support it because they belive in there country alot. The women that dont support it want freedom.A reason why is they might feel like there being control by the government. the separation of church and state is the church is religous and the state isnt that religous thinking.

  2. Some women is because they feel they should respect there religion. While others think they are being too controlled by wearing the viel.the church and state separate because the state belives in law while the church belives in religion.

Muslim women might not support wearing veils because they feel that such covering is not important at all. It is a common misconception that all Muslim women dress the same. While many do cover their heads with head scarves, many don’t cover, and wear more westernized style clothing. Still clothing should be simple and not be meant to attract men or express vanity, according to the Qur’an.

  4. some muslin women support the veil because its a tradition and they feel they would be disrespecting god as well as themselves if they take it off. some women are against this because their tired of hiding and want to reveal themselves to the world. aileen pelegrin

Majority of the Muslim women might support the veil because they're more of the religious type, while others aren't. The concept of "separation of church and state" refers to the distance in the relationship between organized religion and the nation state.
